ICE FISHING TOUR BY CAR, SNACK AND HOT DRINK BY THE OPEN FIRE, LEVI

We will pick you up at the Safarimarket office in Levi, where you will get dressed in warm overalls. Then, we will drive you by car to the nearby ice-fishing location. Upon arrival, you will receive special fisherman’s boots, warm mittens, and a hat to keep you warm and dry during the fishing trip. We will walk a short distance to a small lake, where our guide will give you brief fishing instructions. You will receive your fishing gear and start fishing!

The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, which are usually quite easy to catch. However, fish activity depends on the weather, and in December, due to the short daylight and polar night conditions, the fish may not be very active. We will spend about two hours fishing before taking a break to warm up by the fire and have a snack.

If you’re lucky enough to catch a fish, our guide will help cook it for you over an open fire in the traditional Finnish way of ‘fire-glowing.’ The fish is filleted, pinned to a wooden board, and placed vertically next to the fire flames for about 40 minutes, giving it a natural fire glow and a slightly smoky taste. It’s the best fish meal you will try in Lapland.

In case of no catch, we will offer you a tasty local snack and a warm drink.

During the fishing, you can always warm up in a lean-to by the open fire, which is right by the lake. Our guide will share stories about fishing traditions in Finland. If you wish, you can also take your catch home in a bag.

Ice Fishing for Trout in Levi: A Complete Guide

Ice fishing for trout in Levi offers a unique experience for anglers of all levels. Our guide covers essential tips, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and how-tos for a successful ice fishing trip.

Essential Tips

  1. Right Location: Rely on our Expert Guides. You don't need to worry about finding the best location. Our knowledgeable guides know the top spots and will ensure you get there safely and efficiently.

  2. Check the Ice Conditions: Our Guide ensures the ice is thick enough to support you. Generally, a minimum of 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) of clear ice is considered safe for walking.

  3. Use Proper Gear: Essential equipment includes an ice auger for drilling holes, a sturdy fishing rod, bait (such as worms or artificial lures), and a skimmer to keep the hole clear of ice. You will be provided with everything needed.

  4. Dress Appropriately: Wear layers of warm clothing, including thermal underwear, insulated jackets, waterproof boots, and gloves. A hat and scarf are also essential to protect against the cold.

How-To Guide: Ice Fishing in Finland

  1. Prepare Your Gear: Gather all necessary equipment, including your fishing rod, bait, ice auger, and safety gear.

  2. Drill the Hole: Choose a spot and use your ice auger to drill a hole in the ice. Clear away any ice shavings with a skimmer.

  3. Set Up Your Rod: Bait your hook and lower it into the hole. Be patient and move the bait occasionally to attract fish.

  4. Stay Warm: Keep warm by taking breaks in a shelter or by the fire. Bring hot drinks and snacks to maintain energy levels.

  5. Catch and Cook: If you catch a trout, you can cook it on-site using traditional Finnish methods, such as "fire-glowing," where the fish is cooked on a wooden board next to an open fire.
